Last year in October, the North American Church issued an official response to the damage done by the Doctrine of Discovery—a view of Indigenous peoples and land based on a theology that fueled conquest and dates back to the Crusades. Liberty magazine asked Lynn McDowell (Alberta Conference) to examine the doctrine and its impact, which was published in the July-August issue www.libertymagazine.org as “God, Gold and the Indigenous Other: A church-state tragedy in three acts.” This doctrine enabled the creation of the residential school system and its damage, which is symbolized by the wearing of orange shirts this weekend.
